Homemade Christmas scents

We all know and love the scent of gingerbread, mulled wine, and fir branches during Advent . The aroma of ripe oranges and cinnamon sticks is also essential at this time of year. To get into the Christmas spirit at home, we often use scented oils, candles, or incense sticks. Unfortunately, these are very often treated with chemical additives such as artificial flavorings.

Note: Artificial flavorings can contain harmful substances and, in severe cases, even trigger allergies. These flavorings pose a particular risk to children. Artificial fragrances should be avoided, especially in enclosed spaces.

Since we're big advocates of natural fragrances , we've put together a few tips and tricks for you, just in time for Advent, on how you can transform your home into a fragrant winter oasis with just a few simple steps and basic ingredients. These homemade , festive air fresheners also make great little Christmas gifts.

Our DIY Christmas fragrances are natural, 100% safe and contain no harmful substances!

Natural, quick & easy: The clove orange

Orange and clove scents are certainly among the most well-known Christmas fragrances . Combining these two scents not only creates a natural and long-lasting fragrance experience, but also results in a very decorative, small work of art .

For a decorative orange, you'll need approximately 40 cloves (per orange). Simply insert the pointed end of the clove into the orange peel. How you decorate the orange with the cloves is entirely up to you. Heart shapes, lines, or a specific pattern – you decide how the room fragrance should look. Once the oranges are decorated, you can simply place them in an open bowl. This way, they will subtly release their Christmas scent gradually.

Individual air fresheners

Are there scents that make you feel especially good, that help you unwind ? Then go ahead... create your own personal Christmas scent ! What could be better than creating a room fragrance entirely according to your own preferences or what you already have on hand?

Slice a lemon, lime , and/or orange and place the slices in a clean canning jar. Add your choice of spices and herbs , according to your taste. Popular choices include cloves, cinnamon sticks, lavender, ginger, or even rose petals. For a more intense flavor, you can add a few drops of pure essential oil . Fill the jar with boiling water. Once filled, immediately seal the jar with a lid and let it cool .

Now you have 2 options:

Either you leave all the ingredients in the jar and heat it whenever you want to smell your Christmas fragrance. You can also simply place the jar on the radiator for a continuous release of fragrance .

Alternatively, you can strain the contents of the jar and add your Christmas fragrance to an oil burner or electronic aroma diffuser . You can also pour the contents into a spray bottle and use it as a room spray. Please ensure that the natural oils of your ingredients do not stain anything.

Advent decorations made from citrus peels

In just a few steps, you can create chic decorative stars from citrus peels for the Advent season. All you need are some larger fresh citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, or grapefruits and small cookie cutters .

Step one: Carefully peel the citrus fruits, trying to get larger pieces of peel . Now it's time to cut out your favorite shapes from the fresh peel. Of course, you can choose different shapes. You can also simply slice the citrus fruits if you like.

Step two: The cut-out shapes now need to dry. You can easily let them dry on the radiator. The pleasant scent of the citrus peel will fill the room in just a few minutes.

If you want to use the decorations , they should be pressed to dry; otherwise, the edges of the bowls will curl up unattractively. Two cutting boards are ideal for this. To absorb the moisture, place the bowls on a paper towel and cover them with another piece of paper towel . Then cover everything with the second cutting board and weigh it down with books or a heavy pot. Now the decorative stars can dry for a few days. The paper towel should be changed daily, allowing the bowls to air out for about 15 minutes each time to ensure proper drying.

Your lovely Advent decorations are now finished and ready to use . Have fun trying out and giving away your DIY Advent scents !
