Aromatherapy: How fragrances work – Rose

Fragrances have been proven to have a strong influence on our well-being and mood, and are therefore increasingly being used strategically. This makes it all the more important to understand how fragrances truly work in order to achieve a positive effect on our well-being. In this new blog series , "Aromatherapy: How Fragrances Work," I will gradually give you an overview of the different aromas so that in the future you will know exactly which fragrance is best for your well-being in any given moment.

The queen of essential oils comes first: the rose.

Rose oil is probably one of the most famous essential oils. But not many people know about the effects of this precious oil on our body and mind.

Extraction

The oil is obtained through steam distillation of Rosa Damascena. The blossoms from which the oil is extracted are hand-picked in the early morning hours and processed immediately, as this is when the essential oil content is highest. A single drop of rose oil contains the equivalent of approximately 30 rose petals, which explains why this oil is so precious.

Effect on the psyche

The delicate scent of rose oil has an extremely positive influence on our psyche. It is considered a mood enhancer and is frequently used to combat depression and low moods. Furthermore, rose oil has a strong relaxing and balancing effect. This means that, for example, the oil positively influences and balances our psyche in cases of inner restlessness, tension, and general nervousness.

For sleep disturbances caused by inner restlessness and tension, rose oil has a balancing effect and promotes natural sleep. However, caution is advised! Due to its balancing properties, rose oil can also be stimulating when you are tired. Therefore, it should primarily be used to alleviate restlessness and tension and not for general sleep disorders.

Effect on the body

Rose oil has a wide variety of effects on the body and can be used both internally and externally. I have summarized the most important uses here:

For headaches and migraines: Pain: While the application of rose oil cannot stop a severe migraine, it can reduce its intensity and has a calming effect, even on normal headaches.

For birth preparation and against birth pains: Rose oil has been used for centuries for birth preparation, mainly because of its relaxing effect.

Against scars, wrinkles and stretch marks: Rose oil promotes blood circulation, which means that more nutrients are available for cell division in the treated areas. This increased cell division allows the skin to regenerate and rejuvenate itself.

For muscle tension and cramps: Muscle cramps often occur after exercise or strenuous activity. Rose oil has antispasmodic properties and promotes blood circulation, which helps to remove lactic acid from the muscles more effectively.

By the way! The Greeks already attributed strong aphrodisiac properties to roses... so be careful ;)

Perhaps you will find yourself in one of the situations mentioned above and find some support in rose oil and its effects.

I prefer to use rose oil as a fragrance to relax after a very stressful day. Sometimes it's just hard to switch off after a long day, and a long, hot shower and the effects of the rose are very helpful then.

Fragrant greetings,

Yours, Marie xx
