Aromatherapy: How fragrances work - Eucalyptus

Where does the eucalyptus come from?

Originally from Australia , the eucalyptus tree is best known as a favorite food of koalas. It now also grows in Algeria, Egypt, the Iberian Peninsula, South America, and India. The eucalyptus is one of the tallest trees, reaching heights of up to 60 meters! Because of its deep roots, which draw a significant amount of water from the soil, it was used to combat malaria. By depleting the soil of moisture, it reduces the chances of mosquitoes breeding in humid areas. For this reason, the tree is also known as the " fever tree ."

How is eucalyptus essential oil produced?

Eucalyptus essential oil is extracted from the young leaves of the tree. The plant's thick leaves are rich in essential oils, which gives it its very intense aroma. The essential oil is obtained through steam distillation . Approximately 50 kilograms of dried leaves are used to produce one liter of pure eucalyptus oil. However, the oil is always mixed with other (neutral) oils, as it would be too strong on its own. Eucalyptus essential oil is also one of the most sustainable , as eucalyptus is a rapidly renewable resource .
