Groundbreaking innovations
The German Innovation Award, presented by the German Design Council, recognizes groundbreaking innovations that have a lasting impact and offer added value for the user. A total of 695 entries were received, including submissions from industry giants such as Samsung, Bosch, Deutsche Telekom, and the Swiss corporation ABB, as well as from hidden champions and start-ups.
“User-centricity is the central focus of the evaluation of submitted innovations. It is the distinguishing feature of the German Innovation Award,” explains Andrej Kupetz, CEO of the German Design Council. This works particularly well when future users are involved in product and design development at an early stage. Many companies have recognized this and are employing appropriate methods to develop an optimal product.
Two competition classes
The German Innovation Award is presented in two competition categories: Excellence in Business to Consumer and Excellence in Business to Business . In addition, a winner was selected in the supplementary category "Design Thinking." The jury awarded "Gold," "Winner," and "Special Mention" distinctions in a total of 40 categories.

This is how it was evaluated
The evaluation criteria for the German Innovation Award encompass topics such as the degree of innovation, user benefit, and economic viability. The innovation strategy should consider aspects like social, environmental, and economic sustainability, as well as energy and resource consumption. Factors such as location and employment potential, durability, market readiness, technical quality and functionality, materiality, and synergy effects also play a crucial role in the judging process.
The winners were chosen by a high-caliber jury – including physicists, patent consultants, computer scientists, finance specialists, product designers, technology historians, and marketers. "This guarantees an individual, neutral, and professional evaluation," emphasizes Kupetz.
